Muslim families have been encouraged to view marriage preparation as the foundation of purposeful parenting, with experts stressing that raising righteous and emotionally resilient children begins long before the Nikah.
The message was delivered during a recent episode of The Alhidaayah Show on Salam TV, themed “Premarital Preparation for a Strong Family Foundation for Purposeful Parenting.” The programme focused on the importance of intentional preparation before marriage as a key step towards building stable homes and nurturing future generations.
Hosted by parenting leadership coach and character development expert Miss Naggolola Janat Yahaya, the discussion featured Hajj Sinan Siraj Mbulambago, Administrator of Kibuli Muslim Hospital, Human Resource Practitioner, Social Worker, Da’wah Worker, and Muslim community leader.
The speakers noted that purposeful parenting does not begin at the birth of a child but starts with deliberate preparation before marriage. They explained that the strength of a marriage directly influences the emotional, spiritual, and moral environment in which children grow, shaping their confidence, character, and Islamic identity.
The discussion underscored the importance of building marriages on faith, with couples encouraged to establish a shared commitment to Allah through sincere worship and common Islamic values. Such a foundation, they said, enables parents to raise children who are spiritually grounded, morally upright, and purpose-driven.
Participants also highlighted good character as one of the most important qualities when choosing a spouse. Traits such as honesty, patience, compassion, respect, forgiveness, and emotional maturity were described as essential not only for a healthy marriage but also for modelling positive behaviour that children naturally emulate.
The programme further encouraged prospective couples to engage in open and meaningful conversations before marriage on issues including life goals, careers, finances, family expectations, and parenting philosophies. Such discussions, the experts said, help minimise future conflicts and promote mutual understanding.
Financial preparedness and the establishment of healthy boundaries with extended family were also identified as critical ingredients for a peaceful and secure home environment. Responsible financial planning and respectful family relationships, they noted, contribute significantly to children’s overall wellbeing.
The discussion also addressed the importance of physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing before marriage, encouraging couples to communicate openly in these areas to strengthen their relationship and prepare for the challenges of family life.
In addition, the speakers emphasised the need for a clear understanding of the rights and responsibilities of both husband and wife in Islam. They observed that when spouses fulfil their obligations with sincerity, justice, and compassion, they create homes where children naturally learn responsibility, empathy, discipline, and accountability.
Prospective couples were further advised to develop a shared vision for parenthood by discussing expectations regarding children, discipline, education, and Islamic upbringing before marriage, laying the groundwork for consistent and effective parenting.
The programme concluded with a reminder that while a wedding lasts only a day, marriage is a lifelong commitment whose impact extends across generations. Strong families, the speakers said, are intentionally built through faith, preparation, effective communication, and adherence to Allah’s guidance.
